Week 5, Story 6: The Unknown Masterpiece, Balzac

6. The Unknown Masterpiece, Honoré de Balzac (Feb 1)
This story has been haunting my thoughts for the past few months… just one line from it, at the very end.

I read this story in college as part of an Art Theory class, near the beginning of my studies. It stuck with me, the way in which each of us (artists, or anyone) can get so wrapped up in what we’re doing that we lose sight of how it actually looks from the outside… The idea of the Emporer’s Clothes, but without the malice or ill-intent. As artists, we live with a project for so long that we are no longer able to see it objectively. And I love this story for that.

I’m thankful for Project Gutenberg and free stories online.
